Case Study: Website footprint optimisation and compliance project saves client $6m and increases compliance globally
The Problem:
The Solution:
Our client's website management and agency costs were high and rising year on year. Add to this increased global legislative and industry governance requirements, a need to make their websites accessible and preparation for the (still to come) ‘cookieless world’ meant that urgent action needed to be taken. The implementation of global to local processes were needed coupled with an opportunity to streamline the client’s website footprint.
Firstly, RMA collaborated with a specialist web-development agency to identify ways to improve operational efficiencies, reduce exposure to risk as well as ‘sunset’ pages within the client’s global footprint. Key to this process was to do this whilst ensuring that local nuance was observed, and laws and governance were adhered to.
We then designed a two-year programme to assess the client's 600+ websites against 13 specific legal criteria on age-gating, use of cookies, and assurance against industry regulation compliance. This included extensive evidence-gathering, legal processes and multi-stakeholder management.
Whilst the first two phases of the project focused on cost efficiencies and risk reduction, the final phase saw us indentifying opportunities to increase page accessibility for the visually impaired for future project work.
Results:
300 websites decommissioned, representing 60% of clients’ global footprint
$6m saved in annual agency and hosting costs resulting from page removal
230 websites bought up to required standards, with a view to further optimisation
